Who would I ask to create fabric or material with a custom pattern or design on it?

If I wanted a specific image on material that could then be used for various purposes, how would I go about finding a company who can do that? For example, let's say I wanted to upholster furniture in a custom print - maybe an artist's rendition of my DNA code or whatever - what type of company would I seek out? What if I wanted to upholster 1000 chairs? What if I wanted to upholster only 10?

Before you consider having someone create fabric for you, you might want to test the design yourself. Printable fabrics would be ideal for your project. There are several types and sizes. Normally, you would buy it in sheets (8 1/2" x 11") or on a roll (8 1/2" wide x length of roll). You can purchase cottons, silks, canvas, etc. Several brands are available and instructions are printed on the package.
The basics of using printable fabrics:
1) Prepare your fabric design in a graphic software program or use a digital photo.
2) Place the printable fabric sheets in an inkjet printer and print the design.
3) Peel the paper backing off the printable fabric. Discard the paper backing.
4) Usually you will soak the printed fabric in water and then let it dry to set the inks into the fabric.

There are a number of companies who make printable fabrics, but I have used the HP brand and had very good results. You can buy printable fabric sheets and rolls at your local sewing store or at a hobby store such as Michael's or Hobby Lobby.
